Speed estimation
Estimation of vehicle speed from supplied video or reconstruction
To estimate the speed of a vehicle, AudioVideo Forensics typically use the time-distance method. This involves measuring the time it takes for a vehicle to travel a known distance within the video footage. By using the known distance and time, experts can calculate the vehicle's speed using the formula speed = distance / time.
AVF used this method using supplied measurements on the Glasgow bin lorry enquiry in 2016.
Various factors can affect the accuracy ofthe estimation. For example, the quality of the video footage, the camera angle, and the location of the camera can all impact the accuracy of the speedestimation. AVF have also employed other techniques to gauge and illustrate a vehicles speed and the drivers visible range to the point of collision.
